Skills for University – Reik
To help students get a better feeling for research, this seminar will include two main elements.
A) A guide. Using example articles from various topics of existing research, I plan to cover:
Finding a research topic – how to narrow a chosen field down, how to refine a topic, what is a good thesis statement. For example, is the student’s topic too broad, too subjective, or is the goal firmly defined?
Explaining different methods for material gathering – books vs. articles vs. the internet. There is a lot of information to be found on the internet, how to decide what to trust, what to use?
Interviews – qualitative or quantitative? How to decide what questions to ask, is A or B better for the situation?
Writing strategies – comparative analysis, explaining statistics, or a chart. Discussing when to finish gathering materials and start writing. What kind of environment is helpful?
I plan to focus on the needs of the participating students, therefore,
B) A free flow aspect in which we will take into consideration and try to solve questions and needs of the participating students.
